Choosing a dog pool or cooling mat

A rigid-sided dog paddling pool sets up without inflating, folds flat for the shed and has a drain plug for emptying. Pick a diameter your dog can lie in fully and a wall height they can step over; a dog swimming pool with deeper sides suits confident swimmers and larger breeds. Use it on a flat surface, fill with cold tap water and empty it after use.

The best dog cooling mat for most homes is a self-cooling gel mat that needs no fridge or power. Gel mats are for supervised use only, as chewers can puncture them. For walks and the car, a dog cooling coat or vest is soaked, wrung out and worn damp, and a dog cooling bandana or dog cooling collar does the same job on a smaller scale. None of these replace shade, fresh water and avoiding the midday sun.

Dog Cooling Mats & Pools FAQs

What size dog pool should I buy?

Choose a diameter at least as long as your dog from nose to tail so they can lie flat. Larger pools hold more water, so check your dog can climb in and out easily.

How does a dog cooling mat work?

Gel mats absorb body heat when your dog lies down and recharge once they move off. They do not need chilling, but a cool room helps.

Can I leave my dog on a cooling mat unattended?

We recommend supervised use. If your dog chews, choose a cooling vest or a raised mesh bed instead.
