Choosing a cat scratcher

Cats scratch to stretch and mark, so a post needs to be taller than the cat at full stretch (at least 60cm for an adult) and stable enough not to wobble. Sisal rope is the most durable surface. Some cats prefer horizontal scratching, so a cardboard scratcher or mat on the floor is a good second option.

Place scratchers where the cat already scratches: beside the sofa, by the door and near where they sleep. Cardboard loungers are cheap to replace and double as a bed. Scratch mats can be hung on a wall or wrapped around a table leg.

Cat Scratchers & Posts FAQs

Why does my cat scratch the sofa?

To stretch, shed claw sheaths and leave scent marks. A tall, sturdy scratcher placed right next to the sofa usually redirects it.

Sisal or cardboard?

Sisal lasts longer and suits vertical scratchers. Cardboard is softer, cheaper and preferred by cats that scratch horizontally.

How tall should a scratching post be?

At least 60cm for an adult cat, taller for large breeds, so they can stretch fully.
