Choosing a dog lead

For everyday walks a 1.2–1.8m fixed-length lead with a padded handle is the easiest to control. Slip leads are quick to put on and popular with gundog and working breeds, but they tighten, so avoid them on dogs that pull hard. Long lines of 5–10m are for recall training in open spaces.

Retractable leads give freedom on quiet paths but offer little control near roads, so keep a short lead for town. Bungee or shock-absorbing leads soften sudden pulls on your shoulder. If you walk two dogs, a double lead with a swivel coupler stops tangles.

Which lead stops pulling?

A lead alone will not stop pulling, but a no-pull front-clip harness paired with a short fixed lead makes a big difference. See Dog Harnesses.

Are slip leads safe?

Used correctly on a trained dog, yes. They should sit high behind the ears and never be left on an unattended dog. Avoid them for dogs that pull constantly.

How long should a training lead be?

5m for pavements and parks, 10m for fields and recall practice.
