This automatic pet feeder combines a 5 litre food hopper and a separate 4 litre water tank in one unit, with timed portion feeding and a choice of app control or an onboard camera.

Why we picked it

Most people who buy an automatic feeder end up buying a water fountain too, and then have two appliances, two plugs and two things to clean on the kitchen floor. This does both in one: 5 litres of dry food on one side, 4 litres of water on the other. For a weekend away or a long working day that is the whole problem solved by a single device, and it takes up less floor than the two separates it replaces.

The food side is built around not jamming, which is the thing that actually goes wrong with feeders. The dispensing structure is designed for kibble up to 16mm across — which covers the chunky dental biscuits that choke narrower feeders — and the manufacturer publishes a laboratory figure of 99% blockage-free at that size. A 360-degree sealed fresh lock and an included desiccant keep the food at the bottom of the hopper worth eating by the time you reach it.

The versions, and what each step actually buys you. All three have the same 5 litre hopper, 4 litre water tank, timed feeding, sealed fresh lock and a human body sensor light. The App Control version adds control from your phone. The App & Camera version adds a camera on top of that, with remote viewing, photos, video recording and two-way video calling. If you only want meals to happen on time, the standard version is the same feeder for twenty pounds less.

One thing worth knowing before you choose. It runs from a USB-C adapter or from three alkaline batteries as a backup — but the manufacturer is explicit that when running on batteries, the app and video functions are disabled. The batteries keep your pet fed through a power cut; they do not keep the camera running. Batteries are not included.

Setting up

Wash and fully dry the hopper, water tank and bowls before the first fill — damp parts clump kibble, and clumped kibble is how jams start. Fit the backup batteries before you plug it in, so a power cut cannot catch you out. On the app versions, pair it to your wi-fi standing where the feeder will actually live rather than next to the router. Then test it: run a manual feed and weigh what lands in the bowl against what you programmed, and do that for two or three days before you rely on it.

Using it safely

Dry food only — wet food will not dispense and will spoil in the hopper. Keep the lid latched and the unit against a wall where it cannot be tipped. Do not use a feeder as a reason to leave a pet alone longer: feeders jam, pets knock them over, and the app will not clear a blockage for you. For more than a couple of days, someone should still call in. If your pet is on a prescription or weight-management diet, agree portions with your vet. On the camera version, use a strong unique password on the app account — it streams to your phone over the internet.

Care guide

Strip and wash the hopper, chute, water tank and bowls monthly, ideally when both are nearly empty, and dry everything completely before refilling — damp parts are the single biggest cause of jamming. The water side needs attention more often than the food side; a film forms in any tank within a week or two. Replace the desiccant when it stops feeling dry. Empty the hopper fully once a month rather than endlessly topping up, so old kibble does not sit at the bottom. Wipe the camera lens with a dry microfibre cloth.

FAQs

Does the camera work during a power cut?

No. The batteries keep the feeding going, but the manufacturer states that app and video functions are disabled on battery power. Feeding continues; watching does not.

What is the difference between the three versions?

Same 5L hopper, 4L water tank and timed feeding on all three. App Control adds phone control. App & Camera adds the camera, remote viewing, recording and two-way video calling.

Will it handle large kibble?

Up to 16mm, which covers dental biscuits and most large-breed food. The dispensing channel is designed around that size, and the manufacturer quotes 99% blockage-free in testing at it.

Can I use wet food?

No. Dry only. The manufacturer lists extruded, air-dried, freeze-dried and mixed grain foods.

How many meals a day can I set?

The manufacturer describes it as timed and quantitative but does not publish a maximum number of meals or the gram weight per portion, so we are not going to quote figures. Ask us if that decides it for you.
