This cat water fountain holds 2.2 litres, runs from USB power, and comes with a carbon filter and an optional motion sensor.

Why we picked it

Cats are famously bad at drinking. They came from desert animals that got most of their water from prey and learned to avoid standing water, which is why your cat will ignore a full bowl and then drink from a dripping tap. On a dry-food diet that matters — vets routinely encourage owners to get more water into cats, and moving water is the simplest way to do it. Most cats that would not touch a bowl will drink from a fountain within a day or two.

The 2.2 litre tank is the practical bit. A small fountain needs filling every day or two; this one lasts the best part of a week for one cat, which means it is still running when you get home late or go away for a night.

The motion sensor version only runs the pump when a cat comes near. That saves power and, more usefully, means it is silent at three in the morning instead of trickling away next to your bedroom.

Two honest points. It is plastic, not stainless steel or ceramic — plastic builds up biofilm faster, so this needs a proper wash weekly rather than a rinse. And the filters are a running cost; the five-filter bundle is the sensible buy if you keep it.

  • 2.2 litre tank — around a week for one cat
  • Moving water, which is what gets a reluctant cat drinking
  • Carbon filter included
  • Optional motion sensor so it is quiet when nobody is near it
  • USB powered — runs from a phone plug or a power bank
  • Bundles with one or five filters

Which bundle: If you are trying a fountain for the first time, the single filter is enough to find out whether your cat takes to it. If you already know a fountain works in your house, take the five-filter bundle — filters want changing every few weeks and buying them one at a time is the expensive way. The sensor versions are worth it if the fountain will be anywhere near where you sleep.

What's in the box

  • 1 x fountain with pump and USB cable
  • 1 or 5 carbon filters, depending on bundle
  • Motion sensor, on the sensor bundles

Setting up

Rinse the tank and soak the new filter in cold water for a few minutes before fitting it, or the first bowlful tastes of carbon dust and your cat will walk away from it. Fill with cold tap water, fit the pump, and plug it into a USB adapter. Leave the old bowl out alongside it for the first week — take the bowl away too soon and a suspicious cat simply drinks less.

Using it safely

Never let it run dry: the pump is water-cooled and running it empty will kill it, usually within hours. Top it up before it drops below the pump inlet. Keep the USB cable where the cat cannot chew it, and route it so a kitten cannot pull the fountain over. Use cold water only, never hot. If your cat's drinking suddenly changes a lot in either direction, that is worth a word with your vet rather than a change of bowl.

Care guide

Change the filter every two to four weeks — sooner in a hard-water area. Take the whole thing apart weekly, wash it in hot soapy water and use a bottle brush on the pump housing and the tubes, where the slippery film builds up. That film is the usual reason a cat stops using a fountain it previously liked. No dishwasher, and no bleach.

FAQs

Will a fountain really make my cat drink more?

For most cats, yes — moving water is far more appealing to them than a still bowl, which is why they go for the tap. It is not guaranteed, and a cat that has used the same bowl for ten years may need a fortnight to come round. Leave both out at first.

Is it noisy?

There is a soft trickle, and the pump hums quietly. The sensor versions only run when a cat approaches, which is the better choice if it is going near a bedroom. A fountain that has been allowed to run low gets much louder — that is a prompt to top it up, not a fault.

How often do filters need changing?

Every two to four weeks, and sooner if you are in a hard-water area. That is why we stock the five-filter bundle.

Does it come with a plug?

No — it has a USB cable but no mains adapter. Any phone charger or USB power bank will run it.
