This Christmas cat tree stands 103cm tall in red and green, with a hideaway den at the base, a tree-shaped scratching board, a middle platform and a top bed with a hanging star.

Why we picked it

Every December the same thing happens. You put up a tree, and the cat treats it as a climbing frame with baubles. Shouting does not work, because to a cat you have just installed the best piece of furniture they have ever seen.

The answer that actually works is giving them their own. This is a proper cat tree — a den, a sisal scratching board, two levels to sit on — that happens to look like a Christmas tree. Put it near yours in the last week of November and your cat has somewhere festive of their own to climb, scratch and sleep. Far easier than defending a real tree for six weeks.

It is a working cat tree rather than a novelty. The red house at the base is an enclosed den, 28cm tall with a 23 x 20cm doorway, which is where a nervous cat goes when the house is full of visitors — and at Christmas that matters more than usual. Above it sits a 40 x 27cm tree-shaped scratching board, a 30 x 30cm middle platform, and a 30 x 30cm top bed with raised sides and two little pointed ears. A golden star hangs from the top and there is a spring-mounted ball by the base for batting at.

Posts are 6.5cm sisal-wrapped — the material cats actually prefer to shred, which is the whole point of putting a scratching surface next to your real tree. The platforms and bed are plush over particle board with PP cotton padding.

The one thing that decides whether this suits you. It is rated for one or two cats of up to 5kg each. That covers most adult cats and every kitten, but a large Maine Coon or a heavy British Shorthair is over that limit, and the 23 x 20cm den doorway will be a squeeze for them too. If your cat is a big one, this is not the tree.

Getting your cat to use it instead of your tree: Put it up before the real one, in the same room, and let them claim it first. A cat that has already decided the festive climbing frame is theirs is far less interested in the one that appears a week later. Rub a little catnip on the sisal board on day one if they need convincing.

What's in the box

  • 1 x Christmas cat tree
  • 1 x instruction manual

Setting up

Assemble it on a flat floor and tighten every fixing fully before your cat gets on it — cat trees rely on all the bolts being snug to stay rigid. Stand it against a wall rather than in open floor; with a 40 x 30cm base, a 103cm tower feels considerably more secure to a cat with something behind it. Put it where they already like to sit, not where it looks best, and leave it a few days before expecting interest. A pinch of catnip on the sisal board speeds that up.

Using it safely

Respect the 5kg per cat limit — it is rated for one or two cats of that weight, and a heavier cat on the top bed is how a 40 x 30cm base becomes unstable. Check the fixings every few weeks and retighten anything that has worked loose. Keep an eye on the hanging star and the spring ball; if either starts to come apart, take it off rather than risk a swallowed piece, and never leave a cat unsupervised with a toy that has begun to fray. Keep it clear of your real tree's lights and cables.

Care guide

Vacuum the plush with a brush attachment weekly — polyester plush holds hair quickly. Spot-clean marks with a barely damp cloth and mild soap, then let it dry fully; do not soak it, as the particle board underneath will swell. Trim frayed sisal rather than pulling it, which unwinds the whole post. Pack it flat in a bin bag out of season so it does not collect dust for eleven months.

FAQs

Will this really stop my cat climbing my Christmas tree?

It gives them a better option, which works far more often than telling them off does. Put it up before your real tree and in the same room, so they claim it first.

Is my cat too big for it?

It is rated for cats up to 5kg, and the den doorway is 23 x 20cm. A large Maine Coon or a heavy British Shorthair would be over the limit and a tight fit through the door.

How much floor space does it need?

The base is 40 x 30cm, so it tucks into a corner easily. It stands 103cm tall.

Are the posts real sisal?

Yes — 6.5cm posts wrapped in sisal, plus a sisal tree-shaped scratching board on the front. Sisal is what cats actually prefer to shred, which is why it works as a decoy for your real tree.

Is it just for Christmas?

It is a working cat tree with a den, a sisal board and two levels, so it functions all year. Most people put it away with the decorations, which is a shame but understandable.
