This freestanding dog gate is a three-panel folding barrier on two support feet, which stands on its own without pressure fittings or drilling.

Why we picked it

Pressure gates need two flat solid surfaces to push against. Plenty of the places you actually want to block do not have them: an open-plan doorway, the gap beside a kitchen island, a fireplace, the bottom of an open staircase, an archway. A freestanding barrier does not care — it stands where you put it.

The three panels hinge, so you can angle them to suit the gap rather than being stuck with one fixed width. Folded flat it goes behind a sofa or under a bed when guests come, which a fitted gate cannot do.

It is also the sensible answer in a rented house. No screws, no pressure cups leaving marks on the paintwork, nothing to make good when you move out.

Now the honest part, and it matters. A freestanding barrier is a visual boundary, not a physical restraint. It works on a dog that respects a boundary — most adult dogs, older dogs, recovering dogs, and puppies being taught where they may go. A large determined dog that decides to go through it will go through it, because nothing is holding it to the wall. If you need containment rather than guidance, buy one of our pressure-fitted gates instead.

  • Stands on its own — no drilling, no pressure fittings
  • Three hinged panels you can angle to the gap
  • Works in openings where a pressure gate cannot fit
  • Folds flat for storage
  • Leaves no marks — good for rented homes
  • Moves room to room in seconds

What's in the box

  • 1 x three-panel folding pet barrier
  • 2 x support feet

Setting up

Unfold it, fit the support feet and angle the end panels back slightly rather than standing it dead straight — a shallow V is far more stable than a flat line and is the difference between a barrier that stays up and one that gets nudged over. Put it in place before you need it and let the dog investigate it while you are there, so the first encounter is not them testing it alone.

Using it safely

Never use it on or near stairs. It is not anchored and it will not stop a fall. Do not rely on it to contain a dog that panics, counter-surfs or scratches at barriers, and do not use it as the only thing between a dog and a front door. Keep children from pulling on it — it is designed to stand, not to be leaned on. If your dog has learned it falls over, stop using it rather than propping it up.

Care guide

Wipe down with a damp cloth. Check the hinges and the feet every few months and tighten anything that has worked loose. Store it folded somewhere dry and flat rather than leaning against a wall, which bows the panels over time.

FAQs

Will it stop my dog?

It will stop a dog that respects a boundary, which is most adult dogs and most puppies being taught. It will not stop a large dog that has decided to go through it, because nothing anchors it to the wall. For containment, choose a pressure-fitted gate.

Can I use it on the stairs?

No. It is freestanding and offers no protection against a fall. Stairs need a fitted gate, and the top of a staircase needs a screw-fitted one.

How wide an opening does it cover?

The manufacturer does not publish the span and we will not guess. Tell us the gap you need to cover and we will measure one for you.

Why choose this over a pressure gate?

Because of where it goes. Open-plan rooms, archways, fireplaces and kitchen islands have nothing for a pressure gate to push against. This stands anywhere, folds away, and leaves no marks — which also makes it the better choice in a rented home.
