This self-cleaning cat litter box sifts after every use into a sealed bag inside the drum, holds 9 litres of litter, and runs four gravity sensors plus infrared detection with a child lock.

Why we picked it

Let us deal with the obvious worry first, because it is the right one to have. Automatic litter boxes have a reputation, and it comes from early models that could start a cycle with a cat still inside. That is the whole reason to care about the sensor count on one of these, and it is why we chose this one.

It uses four gravity sensors rather than one, backed by infrared detection, intelligent activity monitoring and a delayed-cleaning timer. Four weight sensors means the box knows a cat is present from any position on the tray, not just dead centre. The delay means it will not begin the moment your cat steps off, so a cat that hops out and straight back in is not caught mid-cycle. And the child lock stops a toddler or a curious cat starting a cycle by pressing a button.

The practical gain is a week or more without scooping. Waste is separated and dropped into a bag inside the drum, sealed away from the room, so the smell goes with it rather than sitting in a tray. For a multi-cat house, where a tray needs scooping twice a day to stay usable, that is the difference between a chore and a non-issue.

The app is more useful than it sounds. It logs weight and visit frequency for each use — and changes in how often a cat uses the tray, or a quiet drop in weight, are among the earliest signs of kidney or urinary problems in cats. You are not diagnosing anything, but you will notice a change weeks before you would have spotted it otherwise. It runs on the Smart Life app over 2.4GHz wi-fi.

Four honest things. It takes most litters — tofu, bentonite, sodium-based and mixed — but not crystal litter, so if that is what you use you would have to switch. The bags are a consumable at 45 x 50cm, which is an ongoing cost. At 48 x 52 x 50.5cm and 7.6kg it is a substantial piece of kit that needs a proper spot, not a corner of the bathroom. And we would not put a young kitten in one: these boxes work on weight and movement detection, and a kitten too light to trigger the sensors reliably should stay on an ordinary tray until they have grown.

  • Cleans automatically after each use, waste sealed into a bag inside the drum
  • Four gravity sensors, infrared detection, activity monitoring and delayed cleaning
  • Child lock on the controls
  • 9 litre litter capacity — a week or more between refills
  • App logs weight and visit frequency for each cat
  • Drum lifts out without tools and is fully washable

Safety 4 gravity sensors, infrared, delay, child lock
App Smart Life, 2.4GHz wi-fi
Litter types Most — but not crystal
Weight 7.6kg, no assembly needed
Switching your cat over: Do not take the old tray away. Put this one beside it, switch it off, and let your cat use it as an ordinary box for a week with their usual litter. Only then turn the cleaning on. Cats object to the noise and movement far more than the box itself, and a cat that has already decided it is theirs will tolerate the cycle. Rushing this step is the single most common reason one of these ends up unused.

Setting up

No assembly needed — it arrives ready. Stand it on a hard, level floor with clear space around the drum, and against a wall so it cannot rock. Connect it to your 2.4GHz wi-fi through the Smart Life app before you add litter; if your router shows a single combined network, split the bands in its settings, which is the step that catches most people out. Fill to the marked line with a compatible litter and fit a bag in the drum. Then leave the cleaning switched off for the first week while your cat gets used to it, as above.

Using it safely

Keep the child lock on in a house with young children. Do not use crystal litter. Do not let a kitten use it until they are heavy enough to trigger the sensors reliably — an ordinary tray until then. Never start a cycle manually without checking the drum is empty of cat first, however many sensors it has. Keep the power cable out of reach of a chewer, and unplug it before you take the drum out to wash. If your cat stops using it, go back to a tray and try again more slowly rather than leaving them with nowhere acceptable to go — a cat holding on causes real urinary problems.

Care guide

Change the waste bag every few days; sealed or not, a full bag will start to smell. Lift the drum out — no tools needed — and wash it fully every two to four weeks with hot water and mild soap, drying it completely before refitting, because damp litter clumps and jams the sifting. Wipe the sensors clean when you do, as dust on an infrared sensor is the usual cause of erratic behaviour. Top the litter back to the line after each empty rather than letting it run low.

FAQs

Is it safe for my cat?

It has four gravity sensors rather than one, plus infrared detection, activity monitoring and a delayed start, so it knows a cat is present from any position and will not begin the moment they step off. That sensor count is the main reason we chose this model. We would still keep kittens on an ordinary tray until they are big enough to trigger the sensors.

Can I use my usual litter?

Tofu, bentonite, sodium-based and mixed litters all work. Crystal litter does not — that is the one exception, so check what you buy before ordering.

How often do I actually have to touch it?

A bag change every few days and a top-up of litter roughly weekly. A full strip and wash every two to four weeks.

Will it work for more than one cat?

Yes — that is where it earns its keep, because it sifts after every single use rather than waiting for you. The app logs weight per visit, which also lets you tell your cats' usage apart if their weights differ.

My cat is nervous. Will they use it?

Most do, if you introduce it properly. Leave the cleaning switched off for the first week with the old tray still available, so they accept the box before they meet the noise. Cats who are rushed onto one often refuse it for good.

Does it need a subscription?

No. The Smart Life app is free. The only ongoing cost is the waste bags, which are a standard 45 x 50cm consumable.
