Choosing a self-cleaning litter box

Check the cat size range: most models suit cats from about 1.5kg to 10kg, and some exclude kittens under six months. Open-top designs are accepted more readily by nervous cats; enclosed drums contain smell better. All need a mains socket and a clumping litter.

Look at waste-drawer capacity (how many days between emptying for your number of cats), whether it uses sealed bags or a lined drawer, how loud the cycle is and whether the app sends alerts. Keep the old tray out alongside it for the first couple of weeks while the cat adjusts.

Do self-cleaning litter boxes really work?

Yes with clumping litter. They detect when the cat leaves, wait a set time, then sift clumps into a sealed drawer. You still refill litter and empty the drawer every week or so.

Are they safe for cats?

Models with weight sensors and pinch detection pause if a cat re-enters mid-cycle. Follow the minimum cat weight and age in the product listing.

What litter do they use?

Standard clumping litter such as bentonite or clumping tofu litter. Crystal and wood-pellet litters do not clump and will not work.
